I’m an independent journalist and documentary filmmaker based in the Middle East, with more than a decade of experience in the region and working proficiency in Arabic. My work focuses on in-depth coverage of conflict and aims to bring nuance and understanding to complex issues.
I tend to focus on underreported stories and investigations that expose abuse of power. My reporting style is rooted in the belief that long-term commitment to a place and its people, coupled with deep knowledge of the culture and language, are required to produce meaningful and accurate work.
From 2018-2023, I was based full-time in Baghdad, covering the end of the war against ISIS and the subsequent fallout between the U.S. and Iran-aligned groups. Before that, I spent three years reporting from South Sudan, often traveling to remote areas to shed light on an underreported conflict.
I work as both a print and television journalist. My writing has been published in the Guardian, the Financial Times, the Intercept, Politico and Foreign Policy. As a director, producer and on-screen correspondent, I have produced TV reports and documentaries for Al Jazeera English, France24 and PBS.
I have published exclusive investigations in partnership with Type Investigations and the Pulitzer Center. My work has been recognized with the Kurt Schork Award, and I’ve been a finalist for the One World Media Award as well as the True Story Award.
I hold a Masters in Public Affairs from Princeton University and have previously worked for the United Nations and the Boston Consulting Group. In addition to my native Slovak, German and English, I speak French and Arabic, as well as elementary Spanish.
